A teenage boy was discovered deceased only a few days following being wrongly accused of stealing the cremated remains of a deceased baby during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has learned.

Tragic Finding

The young boy's parents discovered his remains in his room at his Connah's Quay home on 19 November 2021.

Untrue Allegations Begin

The investigation heard how his mother got a communication on November 8th, 2021 via social media, from a woman inquiring if her son was her child. The message stated: "Tell him thanks for breaking into my apartment."

In a testimony read to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the individual had been in the news, claiming her baby's ashes had been taken in a burglary - a allegation which was false.

Law Enforcement Inquiry

An investigation report from police later concluded the alleged break-in victim had "provided false information" and "it now appears that the items was not taken in the first place".

Media reports about the alleged taken ashes generated social media comments, and although Kai was not named in the messages, his parent said people "knew it was him".

The "social media content were extremely upsetting", she said.

Mental Wellbeing Impact

She explained that her son had been diagnosed with moderate ADHD, and as part of that condition, other peoples' opinions really were important to him.

"This must have affected him severely," she commented, "particularly when this was not true".

The teenager was detained at his residence, but nothing was found. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later released under investigation.

Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing heard, but had failed to reached out to the relatives by the moment of his death.

Isolation and Anxiety

His parent said Kai "withdrew into himself" after the arrest and "would keep asking me whether I had heard anything from the police", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could feel like much longer".

When she spoke to him about the alleged incident, she said her child informed her he had entered the house because the resident who lived there had said he could use the bathroom whenever he wanted, but denied removing anything.

Online Harassment

In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her son was being harassed digitally after the allegations.

The inquest heard that one 19-year-old encouraged the teenager to kill himself.

She had no concerns on the evening before he passed away, explaining how she had listened to him "laughing and teasing".

She described him as a "compassionate, loving" young man, and said her "relatives is totally shattered".

He had been "clearly hiding his concerns", she stated, noting that he could not bear to have anybody "have negative thoughts of him".

Educational Reaction

The inquest heard from educational staff at the local secondary school.

On 8 November, she "heard some boys discussing that Kai had been arrested and that was the initial I learned".

"He informed me... he'd done nothing wrong," she continued.

After the discussion, the educator said she called Kai's parents' telephone and provided a message saying she had spoken to the student about the allegations.

The proceedings learned his parents said they never receive that communication.

Formal Finding

Senior coroner informed the hearing he would wait for documents regarding what improvements had been made to dealing with individuals with ADHD, before determining whether he should make a prevention of future fatalities report.

Providing a descriptive conclusion, he stated: "Approximately November 8th, 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against the teenager, a young individual.

"Likely falsehoods were subsequently exaggerated and amplified through the medium of online networks.

"During November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and following his questioning he was freed while inquiries proceeded."

The coroner concluded: "Exists no proof that the actions or omissions of any organization caused or contributed to his death and although it was the result of a self-inflicted act it is impossible to determine his intent."
