Unusual Crimson Lightning Recorded in the Atmosphere
A group of photographers based in the island nation have recorded photographs of crimson flashes, counted as the most elusive celestial events in the world, in which luminous crimson flashes appear in the sky.
A Remarkable Night of Discovery
The photographers initially planned to shoot the night sky over the unique geological structures in the southern region of the country on a specific autumn evening, before encountering the unusual spectacle.
Initially believing they would be fortunate to get optimal conditions that night, but their shooting session transformed into “an unforgettable one,” one photographer remarked.
While reviewing his photographs for a stellar landscape and found he had recorded scarlet atmospheric flashes,” the photographer said. “The discovery was astounding – there was a whole bunch of joyful noises and all sorts going on in the darkness.”
Explaining Red Sprites
These crimson flashes are electrical discharges in the higher atmospheric layers, generated by storm systems. Differing from traditional lightning that aims at the ground, these events propel upward towards the mesospheric region, producing shapes that look like pillars, tapered shapes or even jellyfish. The earliest recorded picture of a this phenomenon was taken – unintentionally – in 1989, by a group at the University of Minnesota.
Momentary and Ethereal Sightings
The phenomena last for such a short time – persisting for a mere instant – that they are seldom seen to the unaided vision, but an individual was fortunate. “I happened to be looking right at an occurrence when it happened – pure chance looking at the correct area of the heavens and I saw a momentary scarlet burst,” he said.
Observing the phenomena was a dream for the photographer, an honored dark sky artist. “It appears as if you witness something that is not real, it’s very ethereal … it’s this very deep red colour that is there for a split second, so it is fascinating to see.”
Advanced and Artistic Mastery
Recording a this phenomenon requires a expertise in specialized camera skills, as well as an understanding of scientific principles and creative flare, the individual stated. “This is a highly complex type of photography that’s very rewarding as well.”
One of the other individuals remarked it was counted as the “most extraordinary nights” of his career. “I witnessed the galactic band glowing above the distant edge while these enormous red tendrils of light swayed above a storm at a great distance,” he explained.
An Exceptional Photographic Achievement
As far as he knows, there are no additional photographs capturing scarlet electrical bursts and the night sky of the south in one frame.
“It was one of those moments when you understand you are seeing an event you’ll probably never see again.”
