The English golfer Secures the Abu Dhabi Title in Thrilling Playoff Showdown Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated remarkable nerve to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating Tommy Fleetwood in a dramatic play-off following a topsy-turvy last day of play.
The Englishman sank a crucial birdie putt from around eight foot to clinch the win, repeating his sole prior tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Drama
Rai started the last day with a single stroke lead over countryman Tommy Fleetwood and Denmark’s Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a total score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under final round that featured seven birdies and a pair of bogeys.
The challenger moved a stroke ahead with two holes to play after a birdie on the sixteenth, but his rival tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie attempt to claim victory on the final hole.
Playoff Decider
That led to a play-off at the Yas Links course where the eventual winner prevailed to take the championship and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in prize money.

It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”
Notable Performances
The Northern Irish star found himself just too much to make up, coming up a stroke short in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of ten-under. It was McIlroy’s lowest-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and one eagle.
Højgaard fired six birdie putts of his own, but his hopes of topping the standings were dented by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell produced an superb last round 63 to end up in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Daniel Hillier.
