Significant Web Outage Hits Many Websites and Applications
An extensive online failure has disrupted dozens online platforms and apps globally, and users noting problems connecting to the web due to difficulties at Amazon’s web hosting platform.
The disrupted platforms encompass the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, the messaging service Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as multiple Amazon-owned platforms including its key e-commerce platform and the Ring security doorbell company.
Throughout Britain, Lloyds bank was affected along with its subsidiaries the bank Halifax and Bank of Scotland, while there were also reports of problems reaching the HMRC site on Monday morning. Additionally in Britain, many Ring customers used networks to report their security devices were malfunctioning.
Solely in the United Kingdom, accounts of issues on specific apps totaled the tens of thousands for each app.
Officials confirmed that the outage started in the Atlantic coast of the United States at the cloud division, a section that supplies vital online framework for a host of companies, who lease capacity on the company's servers. Amazon Web Services is the most extensive web hosting service.
Just after late night (PDT) in the United States (morning UK time), Amazon confirmed “higher problem frequencies and latencies” for AWS services in a zone on the east coast of the America. The cascading impact appeared to hit apps around the world, and the problem monitoring service indicating problems with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a platform that reports on internet outages, further indicated a rise in issues on that morning, and numerous instances found in Virginia, the site of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where AWS said the outage began.
