English Football News: Hannibal Banned for Spitting; Guardiola Insists 'Back Line Must Improve'

In the latest English football developments, a notable midfielder has been handed a substantial suspension, a manager has singled to a defender's mistakes to make a point, and the Manchester City manager has called for backline betterment after a chaotic win.

Mejbri Issued Four-Match Suspension and Financial Penalty

The Clarets' midfielder Hannibal Mejbri has been given a four-match ban and a financial fine for improper behaviour during a recent match against Leeds United. The governing body stated Mejbri faced an independent disciplinary panel after allegations of spitting in the direction of away supporters around the 67-minute mark of a 2-0 win by Burnley.

A statement explained: “An independent Regulatory Commission has punished the Hannibal Mejbri for his actions during the top-flight match against Leeds on 18 October. It was alleged that he acted against the laws of the game and/or in a poor way and/or using abusive and/or indecent conduct by spitting towards the area of Leeds United fans.”

The statement continued, “Mejbri subsequently admitted the charge, and the Regulatory Commission imposed a four-match suspension and a fine following a hearing. The Regulatory Commission’s full explanation for its decisions will be published at a later date.” Burnley, now 19th in the Premier League table, visit 12th-placed Newcastle on Saturday.

Maresca Singles Out Tosin's Errors to Make an Argument

The Blues' manager Enzo Maresca has stated that a lack of seasoned players is not an issue at team, pointing out how defender Tosin Adarabioyo's years did not prevent the 28-year-old from having poorly during a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United.

The Italian coach, who oversees the most youthful squad in the Premier League, rejected the idea that inexperience played a part in their poor result. He presented his case by criticising Tosin, the oldest outfield player on the pitch, after he delivered a mistake-riddled display at the back.

“We always talk about a lack of experience when we fail to win,” the coach said. “When we defeated Barcelona, we drew against Arsenal, nobody was mentioning experienced personnel. I know that if we don’t win, people are always looking for an explanation, but I think the reason why we didn’t win to Leeds was not down to inexperience, it’s because we just weren't good enough.”

He added, “Who is the most senior player on our team on the pitch? Who was? Was he any good? Therefore, it isn't related to his age. It’s about those 11 players, they were simply not good enough.”

Guardiola Says Defence 'Has to Improve'

Pep Guardiola has stated his team have taken lessons from a midweek scare at Fulham and the episode is now in the past. City held on for a 5-4 win during a remarkable clash on Tuesday, after leading 5-1 with about an hour played.

This followed they fought off a fightback to win 3-2 in the prior game, it raised more questions regarding if City are the defensive steel enough to sustain a challenge to leaders Arsenal. “It’s behind us,” he commented. “Valuable lessons, hopefully. At this level, for every team, one must learn from both good and bad performances and bad things and think of what's next.”

“Of course I’m concerned,” he admitted. “We try to understand what happened, so as not to concede so many goals. After conceding three against Leeds, and five goals by Fulham it shows our versions, correct? Therefore, always we have done many good things. But how many attempts did Leeds have? Three? Scored two. That ratio is bad. And attempts for Fulham have? Five, six? So, the average of shots conceded is is high. We have to improve.”

Newcastle Prioritise New Defenders' Contracts

Newcastle United's new sporting director, Ross Wilson, has placed contract discussions with key defenders Tino Livramento and Sven Botman the priority on his agenda for the club. He joined from Nottingham Forest recently and was pleased to learn playmaker Sandro Tonali has a deal that runs until 2029 with an option until 2030.

This allows Wilson free to prioritise negotiations for Livramento and Botman's agents. Livramento's agreement ending in 2027 and Botman's in 2028, Newcastle's efforts are being treated with some urgency.

“The initial three or four days in the job is when I discovered that Sandro’s deal is much better than I was expecting,” he stated. “However, it is well known that the club wishes to extend Tino’s deal and we wants to extend Sven Botman’s too. Those discussions are underway.”

Manager Eddie Howe is without Botman for the home game with Burnley on Saturday, with the defender expected to remain sidelined for a further period.
