British Expands Toxic Alcohol Toxicity Advisory List with An additional 11 Destinations

Industrial alcohol alert sign

British authorities has added eleven new nations to its travel advisory list about the dangers of toxic alcohol poisoning from adulterated beverages.

This revised travel guidance features Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda following reports of "a worldwide rise in the frequency of confirmed occurrences" of industrial alcohol contamination.

Just a few weeks ago, officials had earlier added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the existing roster, after multiple notable incidents such as the tragic death of 6 travelers in Laos in 2024.

Tourists are being advised that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can lead to permanent eye damage or fatality within twelve to forty-eight hours.

What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Employed?

Methanol is a poisonous substance typically utilized in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This chemical is not meant for drinking.

While it is naturally produced during the manufacture of beverages, licensed producers bring it down to non-dangerous concentrations for drinking through the purification method.

Yet in various destinations, it is surreptitiously added into spirits to cut costs, and since it is flavorless and scentless, it is impossible to identify.

Official Advice for Travelers

Foreign Office representative Hamish Falconer emphasized that every traveler should know the signs of industrial alcohol poisoning.

"If you're drinking spirits abroad, choose reputable establishments and refrain from homemade alcohol or complimentary drinks," the minister warned.

"If something seems unusual, like a hangover that's much more severe than usual or vision problems – get medical help immediately."
